PUTNAMVILLE — Lincoln Park Speedway contested its next-to-last race of the
season on Saturday night with some familiar faces claiming feature races at the
Casey Shuman is always tough to beat in the sprint car division and he found his
way to victory lane once again as he piloted the No. 17 machine to a strong
victory over Josh Burton.
Shuman started on the pole alongside Michigan state champion, Joe Bares. The
pair won their respective heat races along with Jon Sciscoe and Kent Christian.
Once the field took the green flag, Shuman began to pull away almost immediately
as a battle for the next few positions shaped up amongst Bares, Sciscoe and
Danny Holtsclaw. A spin in turn four by Christian brought out the first caution
to re-set the field.
On the re-start, Shuman built another solid lead as Bares and Holtsclaw battled
wheel-to-wheel for second. However, Bares would spin while running in the third
spot and would be forced to the pits shortly afterwards.
With 14 laps recorded, Shuman paced the field with Holtsclaw holding second
ahead of Josh Burton, Sciscoe and Brent Beauchamp.
Shuman continued to pull away to nearly a full straightaway lead as Burton gave
chase. The most exciting battle to the checkered flag was side-by-side duels
between Sciscoe and Brady Short for third and a fifth-place fight between Jeff
Bland Jr. and Holtsclaw.
The victory went to Shuman as Burton came home as the runner-up. Short moved
into the third spot at the finish line as Sciscoe and Bland rounded out the
In the UMP Modified feature, Brian Hayden was able to get past Eric Varner
midway through the feature to pick up his sixth win at LPS this season.
Varner and Hayden battled for the lead over the early circuits of the A-main
before Hayden found an opening at the bottom of turn four and took the point.
Paul Bumgardner and Carlos Bumgardner Sr. fought alongside each other for the
third spot as Chad Combs came to a stop to bring out the caution.
On the re-start, Hayden began to open up a gap out front as Carlos Bumgardner
got past Varner with Paul Bumgardner in tow. With Paul Bumgardner moving into
third, the No. 54 began to slow and had to go to the pits and Varner found
himself in the same boat as he pulled off the track.
Kenny Carmichael Sr. and Dan Lewellen were the hardest chargers as Lewellen came
forward from 15th to take fifth and Carmichael moved up from 11th to take third
behind Carlos Bumgardner. Duane Lee found himself fourth at the finish line
ahead of Lewellen.
In the UMP Super Stock main event, Troy Clark helped himself solidify his UMP
National Points lead by claiming his 13th feature win of the season ahead of Roy
Clark and Jake Leitzman were heat race winners and started in the front row
ahead of Dan McCullough and Bruce.
Clark pulled into the top spot quickly and wouldn’t look back as Bruce followed
ahead of Slick Griffin and Steve Peeden. Leitzman and Mike Staggs were behind
the lead group fighting for the fifth spot.
With five laps left, Clark had his hands full with challenges by Bruce, but was
able to pick up the win as Bruce, Griffin, Peeden and Staggs wrapped up the
Thirty-nine bombers were on hand Saturday night as Ben Williams, David
Bumgardner, Lee Hobbs and Craig Walker claiming heat race wins.
Hobbs took the lead early over Walker and would not be caught on this night as
Walker held off David Bumgardner for the second spot. Greg Sims claimed fourth
and track champion C.J. Bryan advanced through the B-main, started near the back
of the field and made his way all the way up to the fifth spot.
Saturday night will be the final scheduled event with sprints, modifieds, super
stocks and bombers on tap.
